B-Day at the AA - Conservation & Restoration in Belgium

A Study Day organised by a number of distinguished Belgian Conservation practitioners who will give presentations about their involvement with the built heritage of many periods of Belgian’s history.

THE GEORGIAN GROUP
Summer School 2008 - The Repair and Maintenance of Historic Buildings
1st-5th September 2008
The Belle Vue Royal Hotel, Aberystwyth
 
A unique opportunity to gain an understanding of historic buildings and how they can successfully be repaired and maintained. Each session includes practical demonstrations given by leading practitioners and hands-on involvement is encouraged. Homeowners and conservation professionals alike will find these courses of immense value.

MONDAY 1 SEPTEMBER
Building Historic Towns

James Ayres, author of Building the Georgian City, will introduce the week, explaining some of the various building processes relating to historic houses.

Brickwork

Kevin Stubbs will give an illustrated talk about the history of bricks, mortars and renders, supported by samples of bricks to explain their history.
 
Stonework

Rory Young, a stone conservator and designer, will give an opportunity for participants to try their hand at stonework repairs and letter carv

WEDNESDAY 3 SEPTEMBER
Decorative plasterwork
09.30-13.00
Matthew Windross, a plasterwork conservator, will demonstrate how to plaster walls and ceilings and form decorative mouldings in situ.

Historic Paint Colours
14.00-17.00
Patrick Baty is a paintwork/ colour consultant and a leading expert on finishes. Learn about the different colours used on the exteriors and interiors of historic buildings.

THURSDAY 4 SEPTEMBER
Sash window study day
09.30-17.00
Charles Brooking, founder of the Brooking Collection, and Ged Gardiner, a cabinet maker/joiner, will provide a brief history of the construction of the sash window and explain how they may be dated. Ged Gardiner will also give a practical demonstration on
how sash windows were manufactured and how they can be repaired today.

FRIDAY 5 SEPTEMBER
Parks and gardens study day
Landscape Study Day at the Hafod Estate (near Aberystwyth – transport provided if needed)

Ken Murphy, Director of Dyfed Archaeological Trust, will talk about two picturesque landscapes in Wales: Piercefield and Penllergare.

Dr Caroline Palmer, Historic Gardens Consultant, will talk about how to research and rescue neglected historic gardens in Wales.
 
Jennie Macve, Administrator and Researcher for the Hafod Trust, will explain the historical background to the Hafod Landscape Conservation Project.
The study day will include a guided walking tour of the picturesque Hafod Estate.

THE SOCIETY FOR CHURCH ARCHAEOLOGY & SOCIETY FOR POST-MEDIEVAL ARCHAEOLOGY
Joint Annual Conference
12th-14th September 2008
The Maids Head Hotel, Tombland, Norwich
 
Themes covered include the ongoing impact of religious and political conflict in post-Reformation Britain and Europe, the archaeology of immigrant groups in the early modern world, nonconformist buildings and landscapes in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, and post-medieval funerary practices from 1580 to 1900.
 
The conference fee of £42.00 includes tea and coffee breaks and a two-course lunch on Saturday 13th and a tea and coffee break on the morning of Sunday 14th (but not lunch, which can be booked separately at the hotel for £12.95 per person).
 
A one-day rate of £36.00 is available for Saturday 13th only (for instance, if delegates wish to use the Sunday as an opportunity for extended visits to Norwich churches and chapels).
